Dental and Oral Health Knowledge Maintenance Behavior Elementary School Students Mixed-Methods

Abstract

Dental and oral health maintenance among elementary school students is influenced by knowledge and environmental factors that shape daily habits. This study aimed to examine the relationship between dental and oral health knowledge and maintenance behavior among students at SD Negeri 01 Benteng Pasar Atas, Bukittinggi City, and explore the factors underlying this relationship. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was employed, involving 71 students in the quantitative phase and 19 informants in the qualitative phase. Quantitative data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using the chi-square test, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The findings revealed a significant relationship between knowledge and maintenance behavior (p = 0.0001; OR = 15.71; 95% CI: 4.50–54.79). Qualitative findings indicated that fatigue, forgetfulness, lack of motivation, and inconsistent parental supervision hindered the application of knowledge, whereas school-based habituation through UKS/UKGS activities supported healthy practices. In conclusion, knowledge was significantly associated with dental and oral health maintenance behavior, but knowledge alone was insufficient to ensure consistent practices. Schools and Puskesmas should strengthen oral health education and school-based habituation, while parents should supervise children’s toothbrushing and encourage healthier dietary habits. These findings provide a basis for developing an experience-based dental and oral health education module.
